New Delhi, Aug 25 — A 37-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the poolside of the Le Meridien Hotel in central Delhi on Tuesday, police said.
The incident was reported to police shortly after 3 p.m. after a PCR call was received regarding a person having jumped from the fourth-floor poolside of the hotel.
The deceased was identified as Divij Maria, 37, a resident of New Delhi, said the police. According to preliminary police inquiry, Maria had left his job at a company in Gurugram around six months ago.
Police said he had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past few months. He was married.
Following the incident, Maria was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
A Crime Team inspected the spot and collected relevant evidence as part of the preliminary investigation. The body has been preserved for post-mortem examination, said the police personnel handling the case.
Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and are conducting further inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials are examining the circumstances leading up to the death, including the deceased's movements before the incident and other relevant details, officials said. According to officials, further information is awaited as the investigation is being expedited. Sources said that the probe team is expecting crucial details related to the death.
Police have not indicated any other immediate cause or circumstance behind the incident beyond what has emerged during the preliminary inquiry.
According to an official, the incident has prompted a detailed investigation by the Parliament Street police station, with officials continuing to gather evidence and statements as part of the inquest proceedings. Officials said kin of the deceased are being contacted to take the probe further.
