Jaipur, Aug 26 — The All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has approached the Rajasthan High Court challenging the non‑allotment of its election symbol for the upcoming 2026 local body elections in the state.
AIMIM Rajasthan State President Jameel Khan filed a writ petition against the Rajasthan State Election Commission, seeking allotment of the party’s designated ‘Kite’ symbol for the municipal polls.
Detailed arguments were heard before a bench headed by the Acting Chief Justice. Following the hearing, the court scheduled August 31, 2026, to deliver its order.
AIMIM’s legal team argued that the party should be permitted to contest the elections under its established symbol in line with democratic and constitutional principles.
Khan said the party was confident of a favourable decision, citing Supreme Court judgments in similar matters that, he said, strengthen AIMIM’s position.
The issue has also triggered a political confrontation with Rajasthan’s two major parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.
Khan alleged that both parties were opposed to the emergence of a strong third political alternative in the state.
“Neither the BJP nor the Congress wants a strong third front to emerge in Rajasthan. However, the voice of the people and their desire for change cannot be suppressed through administrative or political means,” he said.
The Rajasthan High Court’s decision on August 31 will be significant for AIMIM’s preparations for the local body elections.
A favourable order could allow the party to contest under its official banner and symbol, subject to election rules. If the decision is adverse, AIMIM may consider further legal remedies.
The party reiterated that it will continue its efforts to establish itself as a political alternative in Rajasthan and participate in the upcoming polls.
