Guwahati, July 29 — Assam BJP president and Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia on Wednesday said that the Centre has assured all possible assistance to the flood-ravaged state, adding that the Union government is committed to supporting the people of Assam in relief, rehabilitation and long-term reconstruction efforts.
Speaking to reporters after discussions on the flood situation, Saikia said an Inter-Ministerial Central Team is currently in Assam to assess the extent of damage caused by the devastating floods. He said the team has been reviewing the situation on the ground and holding discussions with the state government and other stakeholders.
Saikia said the state government has already submitted a preliminary report to Prime Minister Narendra Modi detailing the losses suffered in the recent floods. According to him, the report covers damage to agriculture, infrastructure, houses and other public assets, besides highlighting the plight of thousands of affected families.
"The Prime Minister has assured us that the Central government will extend all possible support to Assam during this difficult period. He has expressed concern over the hardships faced by the people, particularly in Upper Assam, and has assured that adequate assistance will be provided for relief and rehabilitation," Saikia said.
The BJP leader said the Centre is also considering measures to ensure long-term support for flood victims instead of limiting assistance to immediate relief. He noted that special attention is being given to farmers who have suffered extensive crop losses, as well as families whose homes were damaged or destroyed in the floods.
Saikia further said the Prime Minister was informed about the ongoing relief measures being undertaken by the Assam government as well as assistance being provided by BJP workers in the affected districts.
He said party workers have been actively engaged in distributing relief materials and extending support to flood-hit families. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, Saikia said the Centre has always stood by Assam during natural disasters and remains committed to helping the state recover from the present crisis.
He expressed confidence that the Union government would continue to provide the necessary financial and logistical assistance for the rehabilitation and restoration of normalcy in the flood-affected areas of the state.
