Guwahati, Aug 3 — Assam’s flood situation remained grim on Monday with the cumulative death toll from this year’s deluge rising to 87, even as the number of affected districts came down to seven.
More than 1.28 lakh people across 380 villages continued to reel under floodwaters, while thousands remained displaced and extensive damage to crops and infrastructure was reported, officials said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the worst‑hit districts are Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Biswanath. A total of 24 revenue circles remain affected, while 14,230 hectares of crop area are still submerged.
Sivasagar continues to account for the highest number of affected people with 55,200 residents impacted, followed by Charaideo (34,050), Jorhat (20,209), Golaghat (10,201) and Dhemaji (8,333).
Officials said that 55 relief camps and relief distribution centres are operational across the affected districts, sheltering 11,066 inmates, while another 184 people are receiving assistance through relief distribution centres outside camps.
Floodwaters have also left a significant trail of destruction. At least 878 houses have suffered partial damage while 302 houses have been fully or severely damaged.
Besides, 301 cattle sheds and huts have also been damaged. The disaster has affected 34,471 animals, while over 54,500 poultry have reportedly been washed away, reflecting the severe impact on the rural economy.
Meanwhile, authorities have reported damage to roads and bridges at multiple locations, particularly in Dhemaji, Charaideo, Biswanath and Cachar, where floodwaters and erosion have disrupted connectivity and restoration work is underway.
