Assam gears up for next infrastructure leap: CM Himanta Sarma

Guwahati, Aug 21 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday highlighted the state’s infrastructure transformation over the last five years, saying the development momentum would continue with an even bigger push in the next phase.

Sharing a series of visuals on social media, Sarma said Assam was preparing for its “next leap”, with the first 100 days of the new phase of development being only a trailer of what lies ahead. The Chief Minister showcased major development achievements across power, healthcare, education and connectivity.

Under the power sector, the state has commissioned the two generating units of the 120 MW Lower Kopili Hydroelectric Power Project, while a 1,300 MW pumped storage project has been approved at Baithalangso in West Karbi Anglong. The projects are expected to strengthen Assam’s power generation and energy storage capacity and support the state’s growing economic and industrial needs.

In healthcare and education, Sarma highlighted the expansion of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital to 4,500 beds. He also pointed to the commencement of the first MBA batch at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati.

The infrastructure push, according to the figures shared by the Chief Minister, also includes two engineering colleges, Tingkhang Polytechnic and two model degree colleges, all of which have been completed.

On road connectivity, the state has completed 552 km of roads, 47 bridges and three major national highway projects, strengthening links between different parts of Assam and improving access to markets, education and healthcare. The Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Flyover in Guwahati was highlighted as part of the state’s connectivity expansion.

Sarma said the development journey would extend beyond the projects already completed, with a focus on highways, hospitals, housing, bridges and other infrastructure.

“You’ve seen Assam’s infrastructure transformation over the last 5 years. Now, gear up for the next leap,” he said, adding that the first 100 days were only the beginning.

The Chief Minister’s message comes as the Assam government seeks to project infrastructure development as a key pillar of its growth agenda, with investments aimed at supporting economic activity and improving public services.
