Guwahati, Oct 22 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday highlighted the state government's initiative to streamline pension processing for retiring employees, saying the system now begins the process 12 months before retirement to ensure timely payments and reduce paperwork.
In a post on social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma said the initiative, implemented through the FinAssam platform, aims to provide retiring employees with greater financial security and peace of mind by completing essential formalities well in advance.
"Retirement should bring peace of mind, not paperwork," the Chief Minister added, outlining the key objective of the initiative.
According to Chief Minister Sarma, the system facilitates early initiation of pension processing, digital verification and timely issuance of Pension Payment Orders (PPOs), which are essential for pensioners to begin receiving their retirement benefits.
The initiative is intended to reduce procedural delays and the administrative burden on employees approaching retirement.
By starting the process a year in advance, the state government seeks to ensure that pension-related documentation and verification are completed before employees formally retire.
The digital system is also expected to improve coordination among departments handling pension cases and minimise the need for repeated visits to government offices to complete formalities.
Pension processing has traditionally involved multiple stages of documentation, verification and approval, sometimes resulting in delays in the release of retirement benefits.
Such delays can cause financial uncertainty for employees transitioning from regular salaries to pensions.
The FinAssam initiative seeks to address these concerns through advance processing and digital verification, enabling retiring employees to focus on their post-retirement lives without being burdened by administrative procedures.
The move is part of the Assam government's broader efforts to digitise public administration and improve the delivery of government services.
However, details regarding the number of employees covered under the system, the proportion of pension cases processed within the stipulated timeline and the extent of reduction in pending cases were not immediately available.
The effectiveness of the initiative will depend on timely coordination among the concerned departments and the successful completion of verification and approval procedures.
