Atlanta communty bank plan draws on Sardar Patel legacy

Atlanta, Nov 1 — A proposed community bank in the Atlanta area will draw its name and visual identity from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s legacy, with organisers hoping to open by April 2027, community leader Dr Vasudev Patel said.

Patel told IANS that the institution would be called Iron Man Unity Bank. He said government formalities remained pending and indicated that the opening timetable was an expectation.

“In the next six months, it is going to open,” he said, before explaining that the outstanding formalities should be completed by April 2027.

Patel said the bank’s logo would feature the Statue of Unity and appear on its cheques and other branding.

He described the proposed design as a way to introduce customers from different communities to Sardar Patel’s role in uniting India. People who saw the logo could ask about it, creating an opportunity to explain that history, he said.

His remarks did not specify the bank’s capital, ownership structure or the government formalities still to be completed.

The proposal emerged alongside a commemoration at the Indian consulate in Atlanta, where External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar unveiled a bust of Sardar Patel on National Unity Day.

Dr Patel, president of the Federation of Gujarati Associations of USA, said the federation’s national team had sponsored the bust.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was independent India’s first deputy prime minister and home minister. He played a central role in bringing princely states into the Indian Union and is widely known as the Iron Man of India.

The Statue of Unity in Gujarat commemorates Patel. His birth anniversary, October 31, is observed as National Unity Day.
