Kolkata, Sep 29 — A total of four people, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minority Morcha Howrah District President Sikandar Khan, were arrested on Tuesday following a complaint alleging violence by several BJP leaders and activists after they entered Shibpur Police Station in Howrah.
It was also alleged that BJP activists attacked a police personnel on duty.
The incident began on Monday night after an old dispute between two BJP groups resurfaced in the area. BJP leader Sikandar Khan and followers of Dawood Khan, who are also BJP workers, became involved in a clash.
Incidentally, Sikandar Khan reached Shibpur Police Station with a few associates and demanded the arrest of Dawood Khan and his group. A heated situation reportedly developed there once again.
It is alleged that the BJP leader and his associates entered the police station and threatened police personnel. They allegedly claimed that they were from the ruling party.
An argument subsequently broke out with the police. According to the police, Sikandar Khan warned a police officer that he would "come and see him". A police personnel member was also allegedly attacked.
On Tuesday, the police registered a suo motu case in connection with the incident.
Along with Sikandar Khan, police arrested three more people. Their names are Manoj Khan, Zahid Kamal and Rohan Singh.
Based on a complaint filed by the other group, the police have also arrested two members of Dawood Khan’s group.
The police produced the arrested people before a court in Howrah on Tuesday.
Regarding the incident, state minister and Howrah Uttar MLA Umesh Rai rejected the allegation that it was a party feud.
He said that it was not a factional dispute within the BJP but a personal problem. However, he added that creating trouble at a police station would not be tolerated and that strict action would be taken against those involved.
Police said they are investigating the matter from all angles and examining CCTV footage from inside and around Shibpur Police Station to identify others who may have been involved.
