Bihar Police to begin large-scale personnel transfers

Patna, Aug 21 — The Bihar Police Headquarters' Personnel and Welfare Division has issued guidelines for large-scale transfers of police personnel from Inspector to Constable across the state.

In an official letter dated August 21, 2026, the Deputy Inspector General (Personnel) directed all DGPs, ADGs, IGs, DIGs, and concerned commissions and training institutes to initiate the transfer process across zones, districts, and various police units based on completion of the prescribed tenure.

The move has been initiated under the Bihar Police (Amendment) Act, 2022, which prescribes a maximum tenure of five years in a single district and eight years in a single range for police personnel from Inspector to Constable.

The cumulative tenure across different units has also been fixed at eight years.

Personnel who have completed the prescribed tenure will be considered for inter-district and inter-range transfers.

A transfer committee constituted by the Director General of Police will take the final decisions.

The committee will consider recommendations made by the Regional Selection Board and the concerned offices before finalising the transfers.

The latest directive is expected to initiate a major reshuffle of police personnel across Bihar, particularly among officers and constables who have completed their maximum permissible tenure in their existing districts, ranges or units.

The Headquarters has clarified that the tenure period will be calculated under Police Order No. 322/2022, with a cut-off date of August 31, 2026.

Furthermore, police personnel with less than two years remaining until retirement will be excluded from this consideration zone.

The Director General of Police (DGP), Bihar, has approved all these procedures.

The department has sought lists of eligible personnel, in both hard and soft copy formats, from all relevant police units and the Regional Selection Board.

Instructions issued alongside the directive require all Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) and Superintendents of Police (SP) to ensure accurate data entry.

Should any error be found in the list, the concerned authorised officer will be held directly accountable.
