Kolkata, Aug 24 — A single‑judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Monday sought a detailed report from the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) on all FIRs registered against Sumit Roy, the personal assistant to Trinamool Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee.
Justice Sougata Bhattacharya directed the DGP’s office to submit the report by the next date of hearing on September 10. The bench also ruled that until then, the police would not be able to adopt any coercive action against Roy.
The court further observed that in case the police attempted coercive action in the interim, Roy would be entitled to seek the court’s attention through his counsel.
On Monday, Roy’s counsel informed the court that his client had been cooperating with the investigation in all cases registered against him by the state police and had appeared whenever summoned by investigating officers.
He said the first FIR was registered against Roy on June 5, followed by another on June 16, and more cases thereafter. He alleged that the police were registering new cases almost every day to harass his client.
Following this submission, Justice Bhattacharya’s bench sought details of all FIRs registered against Roy by the state police to date.
On Monday, state government counsel and Additional Advocate General Rajdip Majumdar pleaded for a stay of the hearing at the Calcutta High Court, citing that a similar case against Roy was pending before the Supreme Court.
He also informed the court that an amount of Rs 20 crore had been transferred to a particular bank account through Roy.
The state police have levelled two main charges against Roy – one relating to illegal land‑grabbing and the other concerning irregularities in state government recruitments during the previous Mamata Banerjee‑led Trinamool regime.
