New Delhi, July 19 — In one of the biggest narcotics destruction drives, the Delhi Police on Monday destroyed 1452 kg of drugs, with its international market value standing at Rs 897 crore.
The destruction of drugs, the tenth such event, was carried out jointly by Delhi Police and the Crime Branch in the presence of several senior officials, highlighting the city government’s ‘zero tolerance’ towards drugs.
With the destruction of 1452 kg of narcotic drugs worth ₹ 897 crore today, the total volume of drugs seized and destroyed has reached 49,663 kg worth ₹ 14,799 crore in the international market.
The drive was undertaken after the declaration of ‘Drug-Free’ India as a national goal by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the policy of ‘Zero Tolerance’ articulated by the Home Minister Amit Shah.
The drugs destroyed today included - 1,010 kg of Methamphetamine, 135 kg of heroin, 62 kg of charas, 37 kg of ganja, 16 kg of methaqualone, 91 kg of poppy straw, 70 kg of phenethylamine, over 15 lacs of tramadol tablets, over 36 thousand bottles of codeine syrup and other psychotropic substances seized during various operations and drives.
Speaking on the occasion, Sh. H.G.S Dhaliwal, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, Delhi Crime Branch underlined that the event was not merely about destroying seized narcotic substances, but dismantling an ecosystem that threatens youth’s future, weakens families and harms the future of the society as a whole.
Delhi Police is working rigorously on a ‘Zero-Tolerance Policy’ against narcotics and is committed to eradicating drugs from their roots. It has taken strict measures against smugglers/traffickers/peddlers of drugs and narcotics.
“Through initiatives like ‘Operation Kavach’ and various other rigorous narcotic detections, operations as well as seizure of high-quality drugs and Drug Destruction program, we have taken significant steps to curb drug trafficking and aim to uproot this menace completely. CP/Delhi has also tasked & sensitised all ranks to make concerted and focused efforts to make Delhi drug-free,” said an official statement by Delhi Police.
