Kolkata, Aug 17 — A huge amount of gold worth over Rs 1 crore was recovered at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata on Monday.
According to airport authorities, about 900 grams of gold was recovered during a raid on a Kolkata-bound flight from Bangkok on Monday. Its market value is about Rs 1.35 crore. Two passengers have been arrested in connection with this incident.
Officers of the NSCBI Airport police station are interrogating them. An investigation has been started to find out where the gold was being smuggled.
According to police sources, the two passengers arrived in Kolkata from Bangkok on Monday. The police had received information about them from secret sources in advance. Based on that information, surveillance was kept on them at the Kolkata airport. Later, they were questioned on suspicion. During interrogation, they confessed that they had gold. The weight of the recovered gold is 900 grams. The initial estimate of the police is that it is 24 carats. Its market value is about Rs 1.35 crore.
The police suspect that an inter-state gold smuggling ring is behind this incident.
The police have started an investigation to find out where this huge amount of gold was being brought from and its destination. They are investigating who else is involved in this incident. The recovery of gold worth crores of rupees at the airport has created a sensation.
Earlier, on August 6, police recovered a huge amount of gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 1 crore from NSCBI airport. Jewellery adorned with ruby and emerald was also recovered. An accused was arrested at the airport in connection with this incident. This huge amount of gold and diamonds was recovered from a domestic cargo. One person was arrested in connection with the recovery of gold and diamond jewellery.
Meanwhile, security has been further tightened at the city airport following the incident and surveillance on passengers has been increased.
