Huge cash recovered from Trinamool office in Bengal's Diamond Harbour

Kolkata, Nov 4 — The police officers of Diamond Harbour Police in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Wednesday recovered huge cash from a party office of the Trinamool Congress at Sarisha under Diamond Harbour sub-division in the district.

According to the Additional Superintendent (zonal) of Diamond Harbour Police, Abhishek Majumdar, the policemen received information of large cash stocked in the Trinamool Congress office after questioning Sumit Roy, the executive assistant of party's general secretary and Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee.

The total cash recovered from the said party office is valued at Rs 1,02,79,000.

Roy was arrested earlier this year in connection with his involvement in an illegal land grabbing case at Salboni in West Midnapore district. Thereafter, Roy was also accused in another case of land theft in Diamond Harbour, in which the police there took him into custody last week.

Abhishek Majumdar told media persons on Wednesday afternoon that Sumit Roy is currently in police custody in a case filed at Kalitala-Ashuti Police Station under Diamond Harbour Police District.

"After being taken into custody, Sumit Roy was questioned. Some specific clues were found from that questioning. Based on those clues, a search was conducted at a particular party office at Sarisha under Diamond Harbour Police district, and Rs 1,02,79,000 was recovered from there," Majumdar said.

However, he did not make it clear who was in charge of that party office.

Although he confirmed that the party office belonged to the Trinamool Congress.

"Investigation is still ongoing to find out who actually ran that particular party office. However, it was a Trinamool Congress party office. We need to verify who was running it," Majumdar said.

It is still unclear why this huge amount of cash was kept in the Trinamool Congress party office and where it came from.

The police are trying to gather more information about the source of this money.

However, the police initially believe that it is related to the case of soil theft registered at Kalitala-Ashuti police station.
