India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the second T20 International against New Zealand after sustaining a right adductor strain during the opening match of the series.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on October 23 that Kishan suffered a low-grade strain during India’s four-wicket victory in the first T20I in Christchurch. The medical team is monitoring his recovery, but the board has not announced a confirmed return date. India have added wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra to the squad as cover for the injured player. Kushagra was already in Christchurch with the India A team and will join the senior squad ahead of the second match. The five-match series continues at Hagley Oval on October 24, with India leading 1-0 after their successful chase of 226 runs in the opening game.
Kishan’s absence creates a selection question for India as the team looks to maintain its winning momentum. He featured in the first match but will miss the second encounter because of the injury. The Editorial Team of Behind The Headlines reports that the team management must now consider its available batting combinations while ensuring the wicketkeeping role remains covered. Kumar Kushagra’s inclusion provides an additional wicketkeeping option, although his addition as cover does not automatically confirm that he will play. India’s final playing XI will determine how the team replaces Kishan in the match.
The injury comes after India produced an aggressive batting performance in the series opener. New Zealand scored 225/4 in 20 overs, with Glenn Phillips making an unbeaten 82 off 40 balls and Finn Allen scoring 45 off 24 deliveries. India responded with 230/6 in 19.4 overs. Sanju Samson led the chase with 67 off 33 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer scored 42 and Naman Dhir remained unbeaten on 42 from 15 deliveries. India won by four wickets to take the lead in the five-match series.
India will look to build on that victory in the second T20I, while New Zealand will aim to level the series on home ground. Kishan’s recovery will remain an important factor for India as the tour progresses. The BCCI has said its medical team will continue to monitor his condition, but no further timeline has been confirmed. The team’s immediate priority will be to settle the playing combination and secure another strong performance against New Zealand.
