Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Sep 17 — A young woman, identified as Anita Bind, was murdered with a sharp-edged weapon in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district on Thursday afternoon, officials said.
A man who was reportedly fleeing the scene was chased and caught by local residents before being handed over to the police.
According to police, the accused has claimed during preliminary questioning that he was the victim's lover.
Anita Bind was posted as a Women Supervisor in Sonua block of West Singhbhum district. Originally a resident of Uttar Pradesh, she had been living as a tenant for about 15 days in a rented accommodation at Sheetla Mandir Gwala Patti in Ward No. 7 of Chakradharpur.
Police said that around 2 p.m. on Thursday, a man identified as Anil Kumar arrived at her residence to meet her. Shortly thereafter, residents heard screams coming from the upper part of the building.
Around the same time, the man was seen rushing out of the house, prompting local people to chase and apprehend him.
When neighbours entered the room, they found Anita lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon. She was rushed to a hospital after police arrived at the spot, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The body has been sent to the Sub-Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have taken the accused, Anil Kumar Bind, into custody and have begun questioning him.
Preliminary investigations indicate that both the victim and the accused are natives of Uttar Pradesh.
Investigators are currently probing the motive behind the murder and searching for the weapon used in the crime.
Police officials said forensic evidence collected from the scene and the post-mortem report will help establish the exact circumstances of the killing.
Authorities are also examining the nature of the relationship between the victim and the accused, as well as the motive behind the attack.
