Gadag, July 24 — A female medical student was found dead under suspicious circumstances in her hostel room on Friday at the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Development University near Nagavi in Gadag district of Karnataka.
Her family has alleged foul play and demanded a thorough investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Veena Hanapur, a student pursuing a Master of Public Health (MPH) course at the university. According to reports, her body was found hanging from a double‑decker bed inside the hostel.
The incident has sparked outrage among the student’s family members, who urged the police to conduct a fair and transparent investigation and determine whether the case was a suicide or a homicide.
Veena’s parents, who had hoped to see their daughter complete her studies and return home as a doctor, were inconsolable upon learning of her death. Family members alleged that she did not die by suicide and claimed she had been murdered.
They pointed to injuries on her face and the presence of blood near her nose as grounds for suspicion. According to the family, Veena’s body was found in a kneeling position, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.
“This is not a suicide; someone assaulted her and then hanged her,” the family alleged, demanding justice and a comprehensive probe into the incident.
Veena was reportedly known for her academic excellence and had consistently secured good marks in her examinations, making the circumstances of her death all the more shocking for her family and classmates.
The family also raised concerns over the conduct of university authorities, alleging that the body had been shifted to a hospital before they arrived at the campus. They questioned why the university staff moved the body before the arrival of her relatives.
