Patna, Aug 26 — Following reports of flooding and a glacier burst in the Nepal‑Tibet region, Bihar has heightened its preparedness for a possible surge in the Gandak River.
Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary urged residents to remain alert, particularly over the next five to six hours and through the night, while stressing that there is no need for panic at present.
Chaudhary said the situation is more serious than in previous instances, although it remains under control. Water released following the glacier burst is expected to travel through the Trishuli River to Devghat before entering the Gandak system, potentially putting additional pressure on the river.
According to the minister, the water could take around two to three hours to reach the Valmikinagar Barrage. A major relief factor is that the Gandak’s current water level remains relatively low. Around 80,000 cusecs is presently being discharged from the barrage, while the system is estimated to be capable of handling a flow of approximately 2.5 lakh cusecs.
The Water Resources Department and state administration are continuously monitoring the river and barrage discharge. Officials have been directed to ensure safe water management through the Gandak Barrage and its canal system.
Engineers and other officials have been told to remain vigilant and conduct regular inspections of embankments and critical water infrastructure.
Chaudhary said the Government of Nepal has also assessed the situation and communicated information to India. Additional relief teams have been deployed in anticipation of an emergency, and essential relief materials have been kept ready, so rescue and relief operations can begin without delay if required.
He appealed to residents to remain vigilant without panicking, follow instructions issued by the administration and avoid paying attention to rumours. He added that Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is personally monitoring the situation.
So far, there has been no reported rise in the Kosi River. Authorities are continuing to closely monitor the Gandak’s water level and the discharge at the Valmikinagar Barrage.
