Two Ugandan nationals apprehended in Delhi's Uttam Nagar for overstaying in India

New Delhi, Sep 6 — Two Ugandan nationals have been apprehended in Delhi's Uttam Nagar area for overstaying in India, officials said on Sunday, adding that the deportation process has now been initiated.

According to the officials, the action was taken as part of a special drive launched by the Delhi Police to identify and verify foreign nationals who have overstayed their permitted period of stay in the country.

The drive is also aimed at checking the status of foreign nationals against whom criminal cases have been registered.

As per the directions of Dwarka District DCP Kushal Pal Singh, and under the supervision of ACP/Dabri, the team of Police Station Uttam Nagar, headed by the SHO, was tasked with tracing foreign nationals who were overstaying in India and verifying the status of those facing criminal cases.

Accordingly, a team from Uttam Nagar Police Station carried out checking and verification of foreign nationals residing in the area.

During the operation, the police team visited the area and interacted with local residents to gather information and develop intelligence regarding foreign nationals staying in the locality.

Subsequently, based on inputs received through technical surveillance and human intelligence, the team traced and apprehended two foreign nationals from the Uttam Nagar area.

The two women were identified as Doreen Ampurire and Gorret Adong.

Following their apprehension, the two foreign nationals were questioned in detail by the police regarding their stay in India. However, during interrogation and verification, they failed to produce valid legal documents or other authorised papers to establish that their stay in the country was lawful.

The police subsequently carried out further verification of the two foreign nationals and initiated the required legal procedure.

After completion of the initial interrogation and verification process, both apprehended Ugandan nationals were produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Delhi.

The FRRO authorities conducted proper verification of the foreign nationals and, following the process, the two women were sent to the detention centre at Shahzada Bagh's Sewa Sadan in Sarai Rohilla.

Officials said the deportation process is underway following the verification and necessary proceedings by the authorities concerned.

The Delhi Police said that they have intensified verification of foreign nationals as part of the ongoing special drive to identify individuals who have overstayed their permitted period in India and to ascertain the status of foreigners involved in or facing criminal cases.
