Bengaluru: The Cyber Crime Wing of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested two fans of actor Darshan and taken one more person into custody for posting dirty and abusive messages online against Kannada actress and former Member of Parliament Ramya, as confirmed by police sources on Saturday.
Background of the Case
This matter is linked to the fan murder case, where actor Darshan is the second accused. The Supreme Court is still looking into whether he should be granted bail.
Actress Ramya had shared a social media post about the court’s proceedings in the case and expressed that justice should be served. After this, some people who claimed to be Darshan’s supporters began abusing and threatening her online.
The police have said that more people are being traced in connection with this cyber abuse. The arrested individuals are from Ballari and Chitradurga districts in Karnataka. The investigation is still ongoing. Shockingly, some of the messages included rape threats.
Ramya’s Complaint to the Police
On July 28, Ramya went to meet Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and filed a complaint against those who sent her vulgar and insulting messages.
She spoke to the media after filing the complaint and said:
“I shared a news report about the Supreme Court hearing regarding Darshan’s bail to show that justice matters to everyone, even common citizens. After that, I was badly trolled online.”
Ramya explained that she filed the case to stand up for women’s rights.
“I have registered a complaint against 43 social media accounts. Some of them even threatened to rape me. If this can happen to someone like me, what about other women? Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh has assured full support and moved the case to the Cyber Crime Wing.”
She also said that Darshan, as a public figure, should have told his fans not to behave like this.
Public Reaction and Support
Ramya highlighted that many fake social media profiles with women’s names were used to send her indecent photos and vulgar messages.
She added, “Though many in the film industry have supported me, several women are scared to speak up because they worry about being insulted or blamed.”
In her official complaint, Ramya mentioned:
“The fans of Darshan sent me very dirty, disrespectful, and offensive messages on Instagram. The language used was so bad that I couldn’t even write the same in the complaint.”
FIRE Group and Women’s Commission Respond
A film industry group called FIRE (Film Industry for Rights and Equality) has also written to Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara, asking for quick action against those who harassed Ramya online.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission has also asked the Bengaluru Police Commissioner to take strong steps in this matter.
