The United States ambassador to India said the recently announced India–US trade agreement was largely finalised because of the leadership and personal engagement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.
US envoy Sergio Gor said the breakthrough in negotiations came through the direct involvement of the two leaders, describing them as the “only two dealmakers” responsible for concluding the agreement. He said their strong personal equation and mutual trust played a decisive role in bringing the talks to a successful conclusion.
The envoy made the remarks while speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026, where he highlighted the importance of the growing partnership between the two countries. Gor noted that the United States views India as a strong and reliable partner and that the trade deal reflects the deepening economic relationship between the two nations.
The Editorial Team of Behind The Headlines reports that the trade agreement marks a significant step in strengthening economic ties between the two countries. Under the framework of the pact, the United States agreed to reduce tariffs on Indian goods, lowering reciprocal tariffs to around 18 percent and rolling back additional duties imposed earlier. The deal is expected to enhance bilateral trade and open new opportunities for businesses and investors in both economies.
The agreement also comes amid broader negotiations aimed at expanding economic cooperation between the two countries. Officials from both sides have indicated that the long-term objective is to significantly increase bilateral trade and strengthen strategic economic ties between Washington and New Delhi in the coming years.
