India’s First Green Hydrogen Power Plant Begins Operations at Kandla Port

In a big step towards clean energy and eco-friendly ports, India’s first fully made-in-India Green Hydrogen Power Plant has started working at Kandla port (Deendayal Port Authority) in Gujarat. The project was inaugurated on Thursday by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.

This power plant can produce around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen every year. It is expected to help reduce pollution in port activities and support India’s larger goal of cutting carbon emissions, especially in the maritime sector.

A Major Step Towards Self-Reliant and Green India

Minister Sonowal said this power plant is a great example of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ — a self-reliant India — as it has been designed and built entirely by Indian engineers. He said the plant should inspire other Indian ports to also adopt new and environment-friendly technologies.

He also appreciated the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) for taking regular steps towards green goals. He reminded everyone that DPA was the first port in India to use an all-electric tugboat, which does not use fuel and runs on clean power.

Built in Just Four Months

Minister Sonowal also highlighted that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhuj on May 26, the foundation stone for a 10 MW Green Hydrogen Project was laid. Now, just four months later, the first 1 MW part of that project is already working, showing the country’s speed in completing green projects.

He called this achievement a “new standard for India’s green energy future”, and praised the speed, scale, and skills used to build it under the Maritime India Vision 2030 plan.

“This plant is a strong example of how India is moving forward with confidence under PM Modi’s leadership to reach Net Zero emissions in the coming years,” he added.

Praise for L&T and DPA

The minister also congratulated the Larsen & Toubro (L&T) engineering team and the leadership of DPA for completing the project quickly and with quality.

Union Minister of State, Shantanu Thakur, also spoke at the event and said, “This is a proud moment not just for Gujarat, but for all of India. It shows our country’s rising leadership in the clean energy sector.”

Leaders Present at the Event

The event was attended by several top officials, including:

  • Union Minister of State, Shantanu Thakur
  • Ports Secretary, T.K. Ramachandran
  • DPA Chairman, Sushil Kumar Singh
  • Senior engineers and team members from L&T and the Ministry

Jan Jagran Darpan’s View:
This is a proud moment for India as it shows our country’s commitment to a greener, cleaner future. The successful start of the Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla port proves that Indian technology and teamwork can lead the way in global climate goals.
