Jio Platforms’ much-awaited IPO is set to open for public subscription on October 21, with the company seeking to raise ₹30,213 crore at a valuation of around $108 billion. The issue has already attracted strong institutional interest, putting one of India’s largest-ever stock market offerings in the spotlight.

The Editorial Team of Behind The Headlines reports that the digital and telecom business backed by Reliance Industries is preparing to enter the public markets as investors assess its subscriber scale, digital services, artificial intelligence ambitions and future growth prospects.

Jio IPO attracts massive institutional demand

The IPO has generated significant interest even before opening to retail investors. On October 19, institutional investors submitted bids worth around $25 billion, nearly 30 times the portion reserved for anchor investors, according to people familiar with the matter. Investors reported to have participated include BlackRock, Fidelity, Singapore’s GIC and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

The response highlights investor interest in Jio’s position in India’s telecom market and its expansion into cloud computing, digital services and artificial intelligence.

Why is Jio Platforms going public?

Jio Platforms is the digital and telecom business of Reliance Industries led by Mukesh Ambani. Its businesses span mobile connectivity, broadband, digital entertainment, enterprise technology and AI-related services.

Since its launch in 2016, Jio has reshaped India’s telecom market through low-cost data and voice services. The business now has more than 500 million subscribers, making its scale a major part of the IPO investment case.

The company plans to use up to ₹27,500 crore of the net proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining proceeds are intended for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditure.

What should investors watch?

The size of the IPO and strong institutional demand have drawn attention, but they do not guarantee listing gains. Investors will need to consider several factors:

  • Valuation: Whether the price adequately reflects Jio’s future growth and profitability.

  • Revenue per user: The company’s ability to increase average revenue per user without losing price-sensitive customers.

  • Competition: Pressure from telecom rivals and the potential impact of satellite broadband on connectivity services.

  • Technology and regulation: Cybersecurity, data privacy and changing telecom rules could affect future growth.

The grey market premium, often discussed before a major IPO, is unofficial and can change rapidly. It should not be treated as a reliable forecast of the listing price.

What happens next?

The public issue is scheduled to open on October 21 and close on October 23, 2026. The expected allotment date is October 26, with listing tentatively planned for October 28, subject to the final timetable. Investors should consult the official red herring prospectus and exchange disclosures before applying.

Jio’s listing will be closely watched as a test of investor appetite for large technology and telecom businesses in India. The key question is whether its enormous user base and digital ambitions can translate into sustainable earnings growth at the IPO valuation.
