Jaipur, Oct 23 — Rajasthan has emerged as the country’s leading state under the PM-KUSUM scheme, with 5.57 GW of decentralised solar energy capacity installed and more than 3.78 lakh farmers benefiting from the initiative.
The state’s power distribution companies have also reported profits, with Ajmer DISCOM posting ₹825 crore and Jaipur DISCOM ₹931 crore in the 2023–24 financial year.
The state government is working to make the state self-reliant in the energy sector, harness its vast solar energy potential and strengthen infrastructure to meet future electricity demand.
Through the timely implementation of policies and schemes, the BJP government has recorded significant progress during its 34-month tenure, surpassing the achievements of the previous Congress government during its first 34 months and, in several areas, its entire five-year term, said officials on Friday.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said the record growth in power generation and solar energy capacity reflected the successful implementation of the state government's policies. Farmers in 26 districts are now receiving electricity during two designated daytime slots, while quality power supply is being ensured across the state, including in remote villages and hamlets.
He alleged that the power sector had suffered from mismanagement under the previous Congress government, with distribution companies (DISCOMs) burdened by debt and consumers struggling to access electricity.
With a clear roadmap for meeting basic requirements such as electricity and water, the BJP government has recorded an increase of 10,920 MW in power generation capacity for state use over the past 34 months.
In comparison, the previous Congress government added 3,958 MW during its entire five-year tenure. The increase under the BJP government is therefore nearly 2.75 times the addition recorded during the Congress government's full term and more than five times the increase achieved during its first 34 months.
Rajasthan's vast solar energy potential has been a major focus of the current government's clean energy strategy. During the past 34 months, the state's solar power generation capacity has increased by 28,303 MW. By comparison, the previous Congress government added 3,985 MW during its first 34 months and 14,878 MW over its entire five-year tenure.
The expansion is aimed at strengthening the state's energy infrastructure while meeting growing electricity demand and promoting renewable energy. Alongside increasing generation capacity, the state government is expanding the transmission network to ensure efficient electricity delivery.
Under the Chief Minister's guidance, high-capacity electrical substations are being established across Rajasthan, with particular emphasis on strengthening transmission infrastructure and supporting renewable energy projects.
During the BJP government's 34-month tenure, two 400 kV grid substations, nine 220 kV substations and 51 132 kV substations have been established. In comparison, the previous Congress government set up one 400 kV substation, five 220 kV substations and 38 132 kV substations during its entire five-year term.
The current government has also established 532 substations with a capacity of 33 kV, compared with 477 during the previous government's first 34 months. The expansion of generation capacity, solar energy and transmission infrastructure is expected to support industrial growth, attract investment and strengthen economic activity across the state. The government aims to advance the vision of 'Viksit Bharat–Viksit Rajasthan'.
Rajasthan leads the country under the PM-KUSUM scheme, with 5.57 GW of decentralised solar energy capacity installed so far, the highest in the country. More than 3.78 lakh farmers have benefited from the initiative.
The financial position of the state's power distribution companies has also improved during the current government's tenure. Ajmer DISCOM recorded a profit of ₹825 crore in the 2023–24 financial year, while Jaipur DISCOM reported a profit of ₹931 crore.
