Shillong, July 29 — Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday announced the expansion of the state's "Achiever of the Month" initiative, saying the recognition programme will now honour exceptional performers from multiple sectors, beginning with music, as part of the government's broader strategy to nurture talent and strengthen the creative economy.

Speaking at the felicitation ceremony for the Chief Minister's Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme (CM-MGMP) 'Achiever of the Month' in Tura, Sangma said the initiative, which was launched in 2018 to acknowledge successful entrepreneurs, would now recognise achievers from different fields every month to inspire excellence and encourage innovation across society.

"We began this programme to celebrate entrepreneurship, but we believe excellence exists across many sectors. Every month, one department will identify and honour an achiever at the Chief Minister's level. We are starting with music, and the next edition will focus on sports," Sangma said.

He said the initiative was not merely about recognising individual accomplishments but also about highlighting entire sectors that contribute to Meghalaya's growth and encouraging young people to pursue their aspirations.

Referring to the state's growing entrepreneurial ecosystem, the Chief Minister cited examples of local innovators, including entrepreneurs manufacturing health and fitness equipment and others who have built successful recycling enterprises worth lakhs of rupees. Such success stories, he said, demonstrated that Meghalaya's youth were capable of building globally competitive businesses when provided with the right support.

Highlighting music as one of Meghalaya's defining cultural strengths, Sangma said the state has earned international recognition for its musical talent but lacked institutional mechanisms to systematically support artists in the past.

He noted that the Chief Minister's Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme now supports thousands of musicians across the state by providing financial assistance and performance opportunities, adding that while more work remains, the initiative has laid the foundation for a vibrant music ecosystem.

Calling on artists to focus on producing original compositions, Sangma said originality was essential for building a distinct identity and enabling musicians from Meghalaya to reach global audiences. He also announced that future editions of flagship events such as the Cherry Blossom Festival would reserve dedicated performance slots for original music by local artists, creating greater visibility for home-grown talent.

Outlining the government's long-term roadmap for the creative sector, Sangma said several major infrastructure projects are being planned to transform Meghalaya into a regional hub for music and entertainment. These include a large performance arena with a capacity of 40,000 to 50,000 people at the upcoming Knowledge City in Mawkynrew near Shillong, a dedicated music institute in Tura, a music-themed hotel featuring daily live performances, and a film city along with a film institute in Shillong.

The Chief Minister stressed that building a sustainable music industry required more than talented performers. He said the state also needed entrepreneurs, managers, sound engineers, producers and investors capable of developing the commercial ecosystem surrounding the arts.

Pointing out that the Northeast still lacks world-class recording studios, Sangma described the sector as a major investment opportunity and urged private players to participate in developing professional music infrastructure.

He added that the government would also strengthen music education by promoting training in music theory, notation and the scientific aspects of music to prepare artists for international standards. Following the programme, Sangma held an interactive session with musicians from across Meghalaya, during which artists shared their experiences, concerns and suggestions on strengthening the state's music ecosystem.

The event also showcased plans for CM-MGMP Season 4, which will place greater emphasis on original compositions, artist development, transparent management systems, digital promotion, better documentation, national and international exposure, and expanded paid performance opportunities.

The inaugural CM-MGMP 'Achiever of the Month' award was presented to 25-year-old singer-songwriter Chegim Durama of Tura.

Recalling his musical journey, Durama said financial assistance received under the programme enabled him to invest in recording equipment, produce new music and continue pursuing his passion. He described the initiative as a turning point in his career, saying it reaffirmed that music deserved recognition and encouraged him to keep creating original work.
