IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Resigns After Flight Crisis

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has stepped down months after the airline faced a major flight disruption crisis.

The Editorial Team of Behind The Headlines reports that Pieter Elbers resigned as the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. The announcement comes roughly three months after the airline experienced one of the biggest operational crises in its history, which led to widespread flight cancellations across India. IndiGo’s Managing Director and co-founder Rahul Bhatia will temporarily take charge of the airline’s management until a new chief executive is appointed.

The crisis occurred in December 2025 when IndiGo struggled to implement new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules introduced to reduce pilot fatigue. The airline failed to adjust crew scheduling in time, which resulted in large-scale cancellations and delays across multiple airports. During the peak of the disruption, thousands of flights were cancelled and many passengers were stranded at airports across the country. Aviation authorities later imposed penalties on the airline and placed it under strict regulatory monitoring to ensure operational stability.

Industry analysts say the leadership change comes at a sensitive time for India’s aviation sector. IndiGo remains the country’s largest airline with a dominant share of the domestic market and an expanding international network. While Elbers had overseen major aircraft orders and expansion plans during his tenure since 2022, the operational crisis and regulatory scrutiny placed significant pressure on the airline’s leadership. The coming months will be crucial as IndiGo works to stabilise operations and restore passenger confidence while searching for a new chief executive.
