PM Modi Expected to Visit the US for UNGA Amid Trade Tensions: Talks with Trump Anticipated

. India’s Diplomatic Agenda: UNGA 80th Session in Focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to travel to the United States in September to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). According to official speaker lists, he is expected to address the assembly on September 26, placing India at the heart of this high-level global event, which runs from September 23 to 29.

2. Potential Summit with President Trump

In addition to his UN appearance, Mr. Modi is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit. The meeting is seen as a key opportunity to address growing tensions in India–U.S. trade relations, particularly following the U.S. decision to raise tariffs on Indian imports tied to its continued purchase of Russian oil.

3. Trade Tensions and Tariff Dynamics Intensify

In recent weeks, the U.S. imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, specifically targeting imports linked to Russian oil purchases—bringing the total to 50%. These measures, deepening trade friction between the two nations, are expected to be a top agenda item at Modi–Trump discussions.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has responded, saying the tariffs are “unjustified and unreasonable” and reaffirmed India’s resolve to protect its national and economic interests.

4. Return of India-U.S. Diplomatic Engagement

A successful visit would mark a renewed moment of India–U.S. engagement after several months of strained relations. Prime Minister Modi’s earlier visit to Washington in February 2025 resulted in discussions on a bilateral trade deal and broader strategic talks—not complete, but now renewed amid mounting challenges.

5. Strategic Implications for India

This diplomatic mission comes at a critical juncture. With India scheduled to address UNGA amidst global crises—such as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and climate challenges—it is a chance to reinforce India’s global outlook. The bilateral visit could also help reset strained relations, revive stalled trade negotiations, and shape India’s future engagement in the global economy.

Editorial Insight

The 80th UNGA serves both global and domestic purposes for India. Mr. Modi’s presence signals India’s commitment to multilateralism, while the anticipated meeting with President Trump provides a vital avenue to address critical economic headwinds. Amid global uncertainty, such careful diplomacy is key to safeguarding India’s interests and strengthening its international influence.
