A 22-year-old American student was stopped by security at Chennai International Airport after a satellite phone was found in his luggage. These types of phones are not allowed in India because they can cause security problems. The incident happened early Thursday morning while a Scoot Airlines flight to Singapore was getting ready to take off at 12:30 a.m.
The student, Oakley Jackson, was heading to Australia through Singapore. He had arrived in Chennai from Delhi a week earlier for a tourist trip.
During the standard security check, the satellite phone was discovered in his bag. When questioned, Jackson said he didn’t know such devices were banned in India. He explained that he had brought the phone from the US to Delhi and then to Chennai without anyone stopping him before.
However, airport authorities did not accept his explanation. They said that such devices could be used in unsafe ways and are a risk to the country’s safety. Because of this, his flight ticket was cancelled, and the phone was taken away.
Jackson and the phone were handed over to the airport police for a detailed investigation.Police are now checking whether he used the satellite phone during his time in Chennai and who he may have talked to. They also want to know if anyone tried to contact him while he was in India.
One senior official said, “Satellite phones don’t need normal mobile networks, so their use is hard to track and can be dangerous for national security. That’s why we always take strict action when we find such phones.”
The US Consulate in Chennai has been told about the case, and American officials are likely to support Jackson during the inquiry.
In India, you can’t carry a satellite phone without special permission from the Department of Telecommunications. If someone breaks this rule, they can face legal action.
Indian authorities have often reminded foreign travellers not to bring such devices unless they have prior approval.
Police said they will decide what to do next based on the results of the investigation. For now, Jackson is still in custody while the probe continues.
