India Has Not Stopped Buying Russian Oil: Government Sources Respond to Trump’s Statement

After former US President Donald Trump said that India has stopped buying oil from Russia, Indian government sources have clearly denied this claim. They said that there is no pause in India’s oil imports from Russia.

India Buys Oil Based on National Needs and Market Rates

Government sources told media that India decides its energy purchases based on what is best for the country and according to global oil prices. They added, “We have no information about any Indian oil companies stopping Russian oil imports.”

So far, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not issued any formal comment on Trump’s statement.

What Did Donald Trump Say?

While speaking to reporters in Washington, D.C., Donald Trump said:

“I heard that India will no longer be buying oil from Russia. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but it would be a good step.”

Trump also said he might impose 100% tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil unless Russia agrees to a major peace deal with Ukraine.

What MEA Said on the Matter

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the topic during a media briefing. He said that India chooses its energy sources depending on the global market and overall situation. “We are not aware of any such specific decisions,” he added.

He also mentioned,

“India’s relationships with other countries are based on our own interests, not the opinion or pressure of any third country. Our partnership with Russia is long-standing and stable.”

Some Reports Suggest Temporary Shift by Refineries

A few media reports claim that some Indian oil companies like:

  • Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)
  • Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL)
  • Bharat Petroleum (BPCL)
  • Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL)

may have temporarily reduced purchases from Russia. Instead, they are buying oil from other regions, such as Abu Dhabi’s Murban crude or West African oil. However, there is no official confirmation that Russian oil imports have stopped completely.

India and the US: Strong Relations Continue

Despite the differences on this issue, India and the US continue to maintain a strong strategic partnership. MEA spokesperson Jaiswal said:

“India and the US share a broad, global partnership based on mutual interests, democratic values, and strong people-to-people connections.”
