Two Mobile Snatchers, Including a Minor, Caught in Central Delhi

In another step toward making Delhi safer, the police in Central Delhi have successfully caught two active mobile snatchers—one of whom is a minor boy.

The accused have been identified as 22-year-old Atharv, a resident of Katra Fazilpur in Daryaganj, and a 16-year-old boy, also from Daryaganj. Police confirmed that the minor is classified as a Child in Conflict with Law (CCL) under legal guidelines.

According to officials, Atharv already had three previous cases registered against him in various police stations, including Kotwali, Chandni Mahal, and Daryaganj.

How the Police Caught Them

The incident began when someone filed a complaint about their mobile phone being snatched in the Daryaganj area. Following this, a case was officially registered under the relevant laws of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A special team from the Daryaganj Police Station, along with members from the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS), started investigating the matter. They carefully checked CCTV camera footage from nearby areas to gather clues.

Thanks to this footage, both accused were arrested on August 1, just two days after the snatching took place on July 30. The stolen mobile phone and the scooter used in the crime were recovered.

Confession and Police Statement

During questioning, both the adult and minor admitted to the crime, according to a statement made by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nidhin Valsan on Saturday.

This is not the only recent case of snatching in the national capital. In another incident last month, police arrested a husband-wife duo who were involved in a chain-snatching case in the Rani Bagh area.

The man, 30-year-old Rahul, and his 28-year-old wife were caught after a woman reported her chain being snatched in broad daylight.

Also in July, a shocking case came to light where a teenage boy who had been missing for three months was found to have been killed after resisting an attempt to snatch his mobile phone in the Alipur area of Delhi. A minor was detained and confessed to committing the crime along with three others.

In June, another big success was recorded when Delhi Police arrested two repeat offenders involved in snatching, along with a person who used to buy stolen goods from them. These arrests were made after a careful investigation by the Anti-Snatching Cell and the Safdarjung Enclave Police.

Jan Jagran Darpan’s Viewpoint:

Snatching incidents, often carried out by young or first-time offenders, are becoming a serious challenge for the police in Delhi. However, the swift actions taken by the local police teams, use of CCTV surveillance, and community cooperation are helping reduce these crimes.

It is also clear that there is an urgent need for awareness campaigns, youth counselling, and family support systems to prevent teenagers from falling into criminal activities.

The Jan Jagran Darpan team will continue to track such stories and highlight both challenges and efforts in maintaining public safety in the capital.
