US Allows India To Buy Russian Oil Temporarily

The US has granted India a temporary waiver to purchase Russian oil amid global energy disruptions.

The United States has allowed India to buy certain Russian crude shipments under a temporary waiver to stabilise global energy supplies. The decision comes as tensions in West Asia disrupted shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. The waiver, issued for about 30 days, permits Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil already at sea so global supply shortages can be eased. US officials said the step is meant to ensure steady oil availability and prevent further spikes in global fuel prices during the ongoing geopolitical crisis.

The Editorial Team of Behind The Headlines reports that the policy reflects Washington’s attempt to balance geopolitical sanctions with global energy stability. India relies heavily on imported crude oil and has significantly increased purchases from Russia since 2022 due to discounted prices. Around 40 percent of India’s crude imports come through the Strait of Hormuz, making the country vulnerable to supply disruptions during Middle East conflicts. Analysts say the waiver is a short-term measure to calm energy markets and maintain oil flows until regional tensions ease and normal supply routes are restored.
