Trump Says US–South Korea Relationship is Strong After New Trade Agreement

The United States and South Korea have recently reached a new trade agreement, and following this, former US President Donald Trump said that the relationship between the two countries is now “great.”

Meeting Planned at the White House

Speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed that he will be meeting South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House in the next two weeks. He added briefly, “We have a great relationship with South Korea,” as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

What’s in the Trade Deal?

As per the new deal, the US government has reduced tariffs (taxes on imports) on Korean goods. Earlier, a 25% tariff was planned, but now it has been brought down to 15%. In exchange, South Korea has promised to invest a large amount of money in the United States and make some other commitments.

Investment and Energy Commitments

According to the deal:

  • South Korea will invest 350 billion US dollars in the American economy.
  • It has also agreed to buy $100 billion worth of US liquefied natural gas and other energy items over the next four years.

This is expected to strengthen trade ties and bring economic benefits to both countries.

No Change in South Korea’s Rice Market

There were earlier claims from the White House that the trade agreement would give American rice producers more access to South Korea’s market. However, the South Korean government clarified that rice was not included in this deal.

In a joint statement, South Korea’s ministries of finance, industry, and agriculture said clearly, “The Korea–US trade deal did not include any agreement on rice imports.”

This came in response to a comment made by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who had said the deal would help American agricultural exports, including rice.

Beef Market Still a Point of Tension

There have also been reports that the US had been pushing South Korea to open up its beef market further. South Korea currently has a ban on beef imports from American cattle older than 30 months, due to health safety reasons. This issue remains unresolved and was not part of the new agreement.

Jan Jagran Darpan’s Take

Our team sees this development as an important moment in global trade relations. The US and South Korea have made a strong step forward in economic cooperation. However, sensitive topics like rice and beef trade remain complex and will need careful negotiation in the future.

With big investments and energy deals on the table, this agreement may help both economies grow and maintain stability in the region.
