On the opening day of the fifth and final Test match between India and England at The Oval, Indian batter Karun Nair showed great patience and strength by scoring an unbeaten 52 runs, helping India reach 204/6 in 64 overs by the end of the day.
The match was part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and the pitch was tough — it was green and helpful for bowlers, especially with cloudy weather and swing conditions. Rain also interrupted the game twice, taking away a large part of playtime. However, Nair’s half-century — his first in almost 9 years (3149 days) — gave India something to smile about.
Nair, who returned to the team in place of Shardul Thakur, made the most of his opportunity by hitting seven boundaries and staying not out at the end of the day. His calm and steady approach was important for India, especially as other batters failed to score big on the challenging surface.
England’s Bowlers Keep India Under Pressure
England won the toss and decided to bowl first, and their decision proved right as Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue each took two wickets, while Chris Woakes also took one before he had to leave the field due to a shoulder injury while stopping a boundary.
After a second rain delay of over an hour, the game resumed quietly. Indian batter B Sai Sudharsan played some smart shots and hit a couple of boundaries off Jamie Overton. But Josh Tongue came back strongly and bowled with great control, making it difficult for the Indian left-handers.
In the 36th over, Tongue bowled a smart delivery that moved just enough to take Sudharsan’s edge, and Jamie Smith caught it easily behind the stumps. Four overs later, Ravindra Jadeja also edged a swinging delivery from Tongue, which was again caught by Smith.
Karun Nair Holds the Fort
Karun Nair had some luck when an inside edge from Chris Woakes missed the stumps and went for four. Dhruv Jurel, at the other end, played some fine shots including a clever boundary off Overton and a leg-side flick off Woakes. However, his time at the crease ended soon after.
Atkinson trapped Jurel lbw (leg before wicket) when he didn’t offer a shot. Jurel took a DRS review and the replays showed the ball would have missed the stumps. But on the very next ball, he tried to cut again and Harry Brook took a sharp catch at second slip, ending Jurel’s innings at 19 runs.
As England’s bowlers continued to bowl tight lines, Karun Nair remained focused. He hit Overton for a well-timed four, and his new partner Washington Sundar also contributed by scoring a boundary off a no-ball from Atkinson.
Just before stumps, Chris Woakes left the field with a shoulder injury while stopping a ball from Nair. Eventually, Nair reached his half-century in 89 balls, and India crossed the 200-run mark right before the end of the day’s play.
