As Bihar enters the crucial election season, efforts to strengthen voter awareness and ensure transparent elections are gaining momentum. In a significant move, District Magistrate Subrat Sen flagged off 13 specially designed campaign vehicles in the district to educate the public about the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems.
The campaign is part of the Election Commission’s wider initiative to make sure that every voter understands how their vote is recorded and verified, and to eliminate misconceptions that often surface during polls.
Why This Initiative Matters
Over the years, EVMs have been at the center of debate in India’s political discourse, with questions raised about their credibility. To counter such doubts, the Election Commission has placed a strong focus on transparency, accessibility, and mass education. The campaign vehicles will travel through villages, towns, and remote areas, ensuring that citizens not only see the machines but also get a chance to understand their working in detail.
What the Vehicles Will Do
Each of the 13 vehicles has been equipped with demo EVMs and VVPAT machines. The trained staff on board will conduct live demonstrations, showing how a vote is cast and how a paper slip is generated in the VVPAT system for verification.
A Push for Inclusive Elections
District Magistrate Subrat Sen emphasized that every vote counts, and therefore, every voter must be aware of the voting process. He highlighted that this awareness drive will empower citizens, reduce hesitation, and encourage greater participation in the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections 2025.
Officials also noted that the initiative is not just about awareness, but also about building trust in the electoral system. By familiarizing voters with the technology, the Election Commission aims to strengthen confidence in free and fair elections.
The Bigger Picture
This move aligns with the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program that has been running nationwide. Similar campaigns in previous elections have shown positive results, with a visible increase in voter turnout and reduction in invalid votes.
With Bihar heading into a high-stakes election, such initiatives could play a decisive role in boosting participation, ensuring inclusivity, and addressing doubts about the voting system.
