Actress Nandini Kashyap to Appear in Court in Hit-and-Run Case

Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap, who was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that led to the death of a 21-year-old engineering student, is set to appear in court today (Friday).

Her two-day police remand has ended, and she will be presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup district. Police sources said that they plan to request the court for extended custody of the actress and will oppose her bail request.

Following the incident, a well-known theatre group in Guwahati has ended their contract with Kashyap.

The young man who lost his life in the accident, Samiul Haque, was working part-time and was on his way home when the tragedy happened. He was hit by a Bolero SUV in the early hours of July 26 in the Dakshingaon area. The driver did not stop to help and left the scene. Samiul was seriously injured and later passed away in the hospital on Tuesday evening.

Kashyap had gone to the police station on July 26 and was questioned. At that time, she was let go with a Personal Recognisance (PR) bond, which means she promised to return if called. She was asked to come back on July 27 for further questioning. After her second round of questioning, she was again allowed to leave. However, after the victim’s death, the police arrested her later that same day.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah, the traffic police were unaware of the accident when it happened. He said, “A two-wheeler rider was hit by a Bolero on the night of July 25. The woman came to the police the next morning and was released on a PR bond. We then issued a notice for her to appear when needed.”

The victim’s family later filed a police complaint, but it did not name anyone specifically. Police say they confirmed Kashyap’s connection to the incident on July 26.

Initially, she was charged under Sections 115(2), 125, and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relate to reckless driving and causing harm. After the death of the victim, Section 105 was added, which deals with an act that leads to death but is not considered murder.

The police have also sent the SUV suspected to be involved in the crash for forensic testing. CCTV recordings from the area are being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Police have confirmed that Kashyap underwent a medical examination after her arrest. However, since she came to the police station on her own earlier, a medical check-up wasn’t done at that time.

The family of the deceased student has expressed their disappointment over Kashyap’s behavior. They claim she didn’t stop to help after hitting Samiul and never visited him in the hospital while he was being treated.
