On August 5, 2025, a powerful flood slammed into Dharali village in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. This sudden surge of water, once thought to be from a heavy rain cloudburst, is now believed to have come from a glacier collapse or a glacial lake burst upstream. The torrent destroyed homes, hotels, and even roads, leaving the entire village in ruins within minutes.
Casualties & Missing People
12 people have died, including local residents and visitors.
Around 60–70 people are still missing, feared buried under mud and debris or swept away.
Eyewitnesses and villagers captured harrowing video scenes of vehicles and homes being engulfed by floodwater.
Rescue Efforts in Full Swing
Rescue teams from NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and the Indian Army’s Ibex Brigade are conducting operations on the ground.
About 130 people have been evacuated so far from the affected areas.
Air operations using military helicopters are in progress to reach remote and inaccessible locations.
Teams are searching through mud layers as deep as 15 meters for survivors but the weather is hampering efforts.
Weather & Terrain Conditions
The region continues to face heavy rainfall alerts, with authorities warning of more flash floods in the coming days.
Mountain terrains and unstable glacial lakes add to the danger. Satellite images show water-filled glacial bodies upstream of Dharali.
Damage to Infrastructure & Property
Over 50 hotels and homestays have been destroyed or washed away.
Around 40–50 houses disappeared under mudflows.
Even parts of the local army camp and helipad were damaged.
Roads leading to Gangotri Dham and regional pilgrimage routes are blocked or unsafe.
Government Response
The Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow and said the state is working “on a war footing” to rescue and support affected residents.
The Home Minister personally contacted the Chief Minister and directed immediate deployment of additional rescue teams.
Relief camps have been set up, and essential supplies like food, water, and medicines are being distributed from safe zones.
Expert Opinion on Cause
Meteorologists and geologists believe a cloudburst is unlikely; instead, signs strongly point to a glacial lake outburst or ice collapse as the trigger.
These glacier-fed disasters are becoming more common in Uttarakhand due to rising temperatures and melting glaciers.
The disaster has underscored the fragile and risk-prone nature of Himalayan towns and pilgrimage routes.

Editorial View
The flash flood in Uttarkashi is one of the most devastating disasters in recent years—shocking in speed and scale. While rescue efforts continue with urgency, experts warn that such catastrophes could strike again unless preventive measures are taken: glacier monitoring, strict land-use planning, and early warning systems are all essential.
